Who are you, and why aren't you feeding me?

Martin Anderton is the owner of Backyard Bounty Fort Collins. Martin has over five years of experience raising chickens, goats, and bees while caring for the soil and ecosystem of his farm. In 2010 he put his learning into practice when he became the co-owner, field manager, and vice president of Stony Brook Valley Farm in MA. After his son was born in 2012 he and his wife decided to scale back and move to CO. Martin's passion for local food, animals and urban farming inspired him to get involved with the local food movement. After learning about Fort Collin's plan to make it easier for anyone in town to own backyard livestock, he decided that the logical way to help the urban agriculture movement in a town dominated by small vegetable gardens with little compost, was to help people add food-producing animals to their beginning homesteads.

It was our first spring settling into our new house, and the long list of "someday dreams" was starting to become reality. One of the elements I had wanted to incorporate into our suburban backyard was honeybees. I am so grateful to have had Martin's guidance in setting things up nicely for our bees! Martin knew what to consider when choosing the precise siting for the hives, how to make their transition easier during setup, and so much more. It was especially helpful to have his hands-on help when our original hive swarmed. He helped us successfully bring two new queens back to our backyard, and quickly set up two new hives for an exciting total of three! It's so educational to work the bees with him- he knows how bees think and has a genuine affection for the "girls," as he calls them. I would gladly call on him anytime for more homesteading projects- I know he would get us off on the right foot! ~Michelle & Pat, Florence, MA.
